Dr. Gopal Singh

Dr. Gopal Singh, the Governor of Goa and Administrator of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli since May, 1987 was the first regular Governor of Nagaland. Dr. Singh received an unprecedented reception on his arrival at Kohima on July 20, 1989. In becoming the first exclusive Governor, he fulfilled a part of the 16-point agreement and wishes of the people of Nagaland. A man of letters and a distinguished litterateur, he translated the entire Granth Sahib, the Sikh scriptures, into English. He was the first Governor to host Pre-Christmas celebrations on December 23, 1989 which were attended by the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues, senior civil and army officers and Church leaders. Inspite of his short tenure of a little over nine months, he was able to win the hearts of people by his impartial and non-partisan conduct and the dignity and efficiency with which he conducted the affairs of the State.
